Hip Hop Samples – Grandmaster Flash and The Furious Five “The Message”
Grandmaster Flash and The Furious Five are one of the most important groups in early hip hop. The group consisted of Grandmaster Flash, Melle Mel, Kid Creole, Mr. Ness/Scorpio, Cowboy, and Rahiem. The group exhibited many elements in hip hop including break-beat dejaying, unique innovations to turntablism from Grandmaster Flash, and memorable rhymes from all the emcees in the group. With all that said, the group is perhaps best known for their signature track “The Message”. “The Message” is one of the most influential tracks in hip hop history; it revolutionized the art of story-telling in hip hop. Soon after, political and social records became more common in hip hop. One unique fact is that Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five are the first hip hop group to ever be inducted in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.
